Young Farmer of the Year

Young Farmer of the Year: Nicky Lockyer

Sponsored by Bicton College

Nominated by Lucy Reed

The youngest of four daughters, Nicky’s loved being on the farm from the day she could toddle. For four generations, Holstein cows have been on the family farm near Honiton and now it’s the turn of Nicky and husband Chris to milk more than a hundred of them every day. And she doesn’t just milk them. From the age of nine or 10, she’s been showing them too at Devon agricultural shows, and last year competed for the first time at the National Holstein Show. These are top pedigree animals, and Nicky raises some of the best.

As well as her career as a dairy farmer, Nicky plays a central part in the development and policy of farming. In 2014 she took on the role of chairman of the Honiton Young Farmers and continues to be an active member. After the death of her father, she now manages the farm, fundraise, and show her beloved Holsteins, even representing the UK in international competitions.
