Injury-hit Torquay United triumph on the road

St Albans City 0 Torquay United 1

With centre forward Aaron Jarvis missing through injury, young defender Ollie Tomlinson stepped up with the goal that secured all three points from their trip to St Albans City this afternoon.
The hosts made the National League South play-off final just a couple of months ago, and started the afternoon as narrow favourites.
But Torquay were in no mood to give way, and thoroughly deserved their second win of the week, having vanquished Chippenham at Plainmoor on Tuesday night.
Manager Gary Johnson, who already has key players Kevin Dawson, Dean Moxey and Finley Craske injured, added Jarvis and skipper Asa Hall to the missing list today, calling Dillon De Silva and Will Jenkins Davies into the starting line-up.
Torquay started well, and De Silva had already glanced a header just wide when Tomlinson struck for the only goal of the game.
In the 38th minute a Jack Stobbs corner caused confusion in the St Albans goalmouth and Tomlinson was quickest to pounce on the ball and steer it home.
Torquay keeper Mark Halstead had to be smart off his line to deny the home side in the opening minutes of the second period, but Torquay had the better of the second half.
Stobbs had the pick of the chances, curling a beauty just over the bar and having another effort blocked.
Cheered on by a sizeable contingent of away fans, the Gulls saw the game out in confident style. With seven points from their four games so far, they are beginning to deliver on the promise of pre-season.
