Exeter's Safer Internet Centre is urging parents concerned about their children's safety online not to be put off by technology.
There's concern some may be holding back because they don't understand how smartphones and tablets work - or haven't entirely grasped Facebook and Twitter.
Steve Shepherd, who works with the Centre, says you don't need to fully understand smartphones and tablets in order to give wise advice.
