Barnstaple park could be sold for road

WATCH: Locals not happy

Barnstaple residents are kicking up a stink over plans to sell off a park and tarmac it for road access to local housing.

More than 130 new homes are set to be built near Westacott Park, but homeowners will need to get in and out - if the development goes ahead.

That's led developer Progress Land to try to buy the park. They say the new road will only take up a small section of the park, and they'll offer more green space elsewhere to compensate for the loss.

Naturally, people who use the park regularly aren't happy with the idea. Campaigner Marcella Priest says: "I know they've got money to put on the table, but we've got love and we're not going to give up. They've picked on the wrong community on the wrong watch."

North Devon District Council will decide on the issue on Monday. Currently they are not meeting housebuilding targets set by the government. It means if this development does go ahead, they may need to accept unwelcome developments further down the line.
