Boys safe after Dartmoor search

Dartmoor's not always an easy place to camp (BBC Spotlight)

Rescue team says they did the right thing

Four teenagers have been found safe and well following a night out on Dartmoor in poor conditions.

They were taking part in a Ten Tors training exercise, but failed to arrive at their scheduled camp on Saturday night.

Dartmoor Search and Rescue was called for help just before midnight, and spent eight hours looking for the boys, covering 24 square metres of moorland over the team's planned route, possible other ways used to get off the moor, and alternative routes to cross rivers which were very high.

The rescue teams had to contend with the heavy rain and misty conditions that made searching difficult.

The boys were found soon after they resumed their walk on Sunday morning, having found a sheltered spot to camp which was not visible unless very close in the dark, which was a good distance from their planned river crossing point.

Dartmoor Search and Rescue says the teenagers were well equipped and did the right thing. They had to go off route and their mobile phones didn’t have reception, so they camped and waited until the morning.

The rescue organisation has thanks the Two Bridges Hotel for accommodating the teams after the scare.
