Bumper start to staycation season

WATCH: It's packed, that there Devon!

Wednesday is expected to be a good-weather blip, but soaring temperatures over the bank holiday weekend, returning on Thursday for the end of half term, has led to a huge influx of tourists in Devon. Local residents have joined them on the beaches and moors too.

Many hospitality businesses are reporting roaring trade, but also staff shortages - partly down to fewer students and overseas' workers in the area. But that's not stopping people enjoying some return to normality as covid immunisation becomes more prevalent.

Paignton cafe owner Simon De-Vey says he's seeing people from around Devon visit Torbay. "I'm very optimistic that people have had enough of lockdown, and they want to get out and about. Businesses want to welcome the tourists," he says.

Pressure has been placed on the area's emergency services though. South West Ambulance Service declared a critical incident at the weekend. They ask that people only call for an ambulance in life-threatening emergencies.
