Emergency services attended a fire in Exeter City Centre on Monday evening after reports of an alarm sounding.
Three fire engines were sent to the scene where crews discovered the kitchen area of Terry's Cafe alight.
Firefighters with breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze which left the upper floors smoke damaged.
Following investigation, the cause is thought to be accidental and the result of an electrical appliance fault.
