Chiefs' Jack Nowell injured again

He pulls up in training

Exeter Chiefs' and England winger Jack Nowell, who has been out of action for much of the season, won't be returning any time soon after pulling up injured in training.

Chiefs' director of rugby Rob Baxter has told BBC Radio Devon that the new injury is likely to keep Nowell out for "a little while."

Nowell, who's 27, hasn't played since having injury on a toe in October. It had been hoped he would be back playing again this month. That's not now going to happen.

Baxter told the BBC: "

"At this stage it's a bit early to give the full extent of the injury; it's just one of those things. We kind of held Jack back for a week to give him a couple of weeks of full training, and unfortunately later on in the second week, he pulled up with another injury and now we're going to have to wait a little while longer until we get him back to full fitness."

The delay to club rugby, combined with the injury, lessens the chances of Nowell joining international matches with the British and Irish Lions this season.

Baxter says: "The only thing I can encourage him to do is to stay energised and deal with his rehab well and come back and that there'll be enough rugby left for him with Exeter. Hopefully we will be involved in enough big games that there'll be plenty of opportunities to showcase his talent."
