City council defends high income from parking

Exeter city council has hit back at the local government secretary's warning not to use parking charges and fines as a cash cow.

Exeter gets the second highest amount of money from parking, out of all the councils in the south west - expected to be 4 million pounds in the current financial year.

Eric Pickles says there's a need to rein in 'unfair' town hall parking rules which are hitting businesses and hard-working residents.

But the city council says the income from parking is invested in things like CCTV, street cleaning, parks and gardens and the museum, all of which benefit residents and businesses.
