Condolences sent on death of Exmouth teenager

Police commissioner and Exmouth school respond

An Exmouth school says it is saddened following the death of a teenager girl who died following an incident at a nightclub at the weekend.

The 16-year-old is thought to have taken a substance, whilst a boy of the same age has been released on police bail after being questioned on suspicion of supplying a drug.

Move nightclub, where the youngsters were enjoying a night out, has closed until further notice and sent its condolences to the girl's family.

In a message on its website, Exmouth Community College says it is "aware of a tragic event affecting one of our students" and that "the whole school community is extremely saddened by what has happened, and our sincere condolences go to the family and friends of the young person who has sadly passed away."

It is arranging support for other students affected by the death and cancelled mock exams for year 11 pupils on Monday.Separately, police and crime commissioner Alison Hernandez expressing her sympathy.

She said: “My heartfelt condolences go to the family of this girl, whose life has been cut so tragically short. It is hard to imagine what they must be going through.

“It is too early to say precisely what happened on this occasion but we know recreational drugs cause too much harm. Incidents such as this remind us of the devastating impact they can have on individuals, families and the wider community. Our residents want drugs out of Devon and Cornwall, that is why reducing drugs harm is one of my Police and Crime Plan priorities.

“On a weekend where Devon and Cornwall Police’s focus has been on recreational drugs this tragedy reminds us that there is so much we need to do to educate our young people, who may feel pressured to take drugs.”
