Council plans to cut road maintenance and winter gritting

Cutbacks to the maintenance of Devon's road network are being proposed Cutbacks to the maintenance of Devon's road network are being proposed by the county council as it looks to reduce spending on highways by three point four million pounds next year. A nine week consultation's been launched today on the proposals.

The council says ongoing Government austerity measures are forcing the cuts.... and the measures being put forward are designed to protect road safety while making the savings.

The plans include cutting back on salting and gritting some smaller roads during wintry weather, no longer funding the spraying of weeds, and only cutting back roadside verges where it's needed to maintain visibility for motorists.

The number of frontline staff in the neighbourhood highway team would be reduced by a fifth, and there'd also be fewer of the staff who visit parishes to carry out cleaning and drainage maintenance.
