Devon marine jailed for 18 years for terrorism offences

Devon and Cornwall Police are paying tribute to local residents after a Royal Marine from Exminster was jailed for 18 years for terrorism offences.

31-year-old Ciaran Maxwell admitted preparing terrorist acts for dissident republicans in Northern Ireland.

The Old Bailey heard he built 14 pipe bombs designed to attack the police and stashed other explosives at sites in Powderham and in Northern Ireland.

Superintendent Jacqui Hawley, the police commander for the area which includes Powderham, said information from the public was crucial in this case, and is vital to the fight against terrorism.
