VIDEO: A tough year to have growing children
Growing children are always costly; but in pandemic year, many have outgrown school uniforms they have hardly worn.
On top of that, the hit to many families' incomes as jobs are lost or working hours reduced because of furlough, makes buying replacement uniform an expense many cannot afford.
A number of Devon schools are relaxing uniform policy to help. And some, such as St. Peter's at Budleigh Salterton, have opened uniform swap shop.
Chair of the parent-teacher association Catherine Fitzgerald says: "It's been really difficult. We're seeing lots of families come back with very different circumstances to a year ago. So just to do something small to make going back to school more realistic, reduce the cost of doing that has been really nice."
School uniforms are thought to cost between £100 and £300 per secondary age child.
