Exeter covid cases up sevenfold this week

University is major hotspot

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Exeter has jumped dramatically in the past week.

From a low base of just nine last week, cases rose to 67 in the seven days to Friday.

With freshers' week only just ended, Exeter University is the city's hotspot.

Council leader Phil Bialyk believes the local public health authorities are dealing with the pandemic well. He says there's been no spread into the wider community from the university as yet, but more tests have been undertaken recently and the council acknowledges that the city will see more cases in the near future.

It's understood that most of the students who have tested positive were not displaying covid symptoms. All the people affected are said to be self-isolating.
