Exeter University investigating law society racism allegations

The University of Exeter says it is investigating claims of racism published on social media by law society members.

Screenshots of comments, which were not only racist but also include homophobic comments and others relating to rape and death threats, have been made public by a student, who has reported the members of the Bracton Law Society to university bosses and the students' union, Exeter Guild.

The comments, described as "vile" and "deplorable", were made by society members on a private students' WhatsApp group.

The Bracton Law Society says it has removed those involved from the committee and indefinitely banned all those involved from the society.

The University tweeted "we unreservedly condemn any act of racism".

It added: "Incidents of this nature should not, and will not, be tolerated and we are committed to eradicating any form of discrimination or harrassment, wherever it may appear."

It said it could not comment further until an investigation concludes but said that where members have broken the code of conduct, it will take action, referring to University disciplinary processes where necessary.
