Highways teams assess flood damage

Teams from Devon county council's highways department have been out on the roads from first light this morning.

They're doing what they can to prevent further flood damage before the next band of heavy rain.

Yesterday saw a lot of damage to road surfaces - as water got under the top layer and caused the tarmac to break up when traffic passed over it.

The teams will be assessing the damage and unblocking drains and culverts, which have filled up with leaves washed into them by the flood water.

Hugh Griffiths, the manager of Devon County Council's highways operation control centre, says it'll  also be vital to repair what they can, before winter brings its icy conditions... which pose a further threat to the condition of roads
