But car journeys rising again now
Devon cyclists Heidi and Sean, who have disabilities, have been able to enjoy the freedom of some roads during lockdown. But that's changing as more people get back into their vehicles.
Train operator GWR's actively encouraging people not to use their trains unless the journey is strictly necessary; social distancing rules mean they have less capacity and want to save it for key workers. It's the same with Stagecoach buses.
Walking and cycling journeys have increased during lockdown. Air quality has been better. But many people say they're too nervous to use public transport, do want to reserve spaces on buses and trains for essential workers, so prefer to use their cars. Some economists have predicted car sales - and particularly used car sales - may rise in the months ahead as people find they need more private vehicles, although the manufacture of new vehicles was only around 200 in April, a fraction of its usual capacity.
