Cost-cutting measures announced by NHS group

A Devon based NHS group have defended their decision to make overweight people and smokers improve their own health before having routine surgery.

The Northern, Eastern and Western Clinical Commissioning Group say they're facing a deficit of fourteen and a half million pounds and must prioritise essential care.

Morbidly obese patients will have to lose weight before routine operations and smokers must quit six weeks before surgery.

Hernia treatments, botox injections and cataract operations are under review, and treatments where there is little or poor evidence of outcomes will be suspended.
