Lorraine Cox murder trial starts

Lorraine Cox went missing in September 2020

Court hears she was dismembered

A court has heard how an Exeter woman was killed and cut into pieces following a night out in Exeter.

Initially police put out appeals to find Lorraine Cox who had gone missing on 1 September 2020. But a week later, the case was being treated as murder following discovery of remains in woodland to the north west of the city near Newton St Cyres.

Azum Mangori, 24, also known as Christopher Mayer, of no fixed abode, denies murdering Ms Cox, but admits the prevention of a lawful burial.

A jury at Exeter Crown Court has heard from the prosecution that Mr Mangori and Ms Cox had sex in an alleyway off Sidwell Street in central Exeter. After going to his room above a kebab shop in Mary Arches Street, he is alleged to have killed her before cutting her into seven pieces.

Prosecutor Simon Laws QC told the jury: "He mutilated the body in other ways and disposed of her clothing and all the possessions she had with her."

The court heard that Mr Mangori had been living in Exeter since July 2020 and is originally from the Kurdish region of Iraq. He is said to have watched a video on dismembering bodies some days ahead of the killing.

The trial continues.
