Bird flu action continues

After being closed all week because of an outbreak of bird flu, Paignton Zoo has confirmed it will stay shut until at least Tuesday.

The infection resulting in action across Devon and Cornwall, restricting the movement of some birds, including chickens kept privately.

The zoo says that it is cooperating with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and the Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra) to implement biosecurity and quarantine measures.

In a statement, they say: "Our priority throughout has been the health and welfare of our birds and we have been doing all we can to ensure their safety and the continued provision of their usual excellent care.

"The positive test results have meant that we have been placed under a restriction notice by APHA, and the findings of their investigation have led to a list of actions which we are now required to comply with.

"This weekend will be spent finalising the necessary biosecurity and quarantine measures to enable us to implement the required actions. We have been overwhelmed by the level of support shown by our supporters, members and local community and extend our thanks to all who have wished us well at this difficult time.

"We have also received a number of questions about bird flu over the past few days and have added some further information to our website: www.paigntonzoo.org.uk/blog/what-is-bird-flu/

"We will not be opening to visitors on Monday 5 September but hope to do so as soon after that date as possible. Those who have already booked will be refunded automatically and we are working to contact everyone as soon as possible."

They have thanked everyone who has been involved in tackling the issue.
