Birds hit by Brexit bureaucracy
Devon pheasants that should have gone to Belgium but were stuck in the county have instead gone into pies to feed the homeless in Exeter.
Although the pheasant shooting season doesn't end until 1 February, Wiscombe Park and Sidbury Manor had 300 of the tasty birds left over from a shoot. They couldn't be exported after the late Brexit deal, just days before the deadline, meant paperwork couldn't be completed.
What's bad for Belgium game-lovers is good for some underprivileged people in Devon. Although the birds could have been sold in the UK, with the covid crisis putting extra demands on those relying on support services such as Petrock's in Exeter, it also provided an opportunity to help local people.
Holly Strawbridge from Wiscombe Park and Sidbury Manor said "The protein content is higher. It's quite a lean meat and it's so easy to use. A lot of people don't realise how versatile it is."
They're planning to provide 500 pheasant pies over the coming weeks.
