Four in contention

The person who will be Devon and Cornwall's police and crime commissioner for the next five years will be announced shortly.

Alison Hernandez, the Conservative candidate who has held the post since 2016 is thought to be ahead in the count, which is taking place at Riverside Leisure Centre in Exeter.

She faces opposition from candidates from Labour, Liberal Democrats and the Green Party.

Elections took place across Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly on Thursday 6 May, along with other local elections. Exeter's returning officer John Street - the official responsible for the fair running of the election and count - is the person in charge of managing this result.

Voters made a first and second choice. If a candidate doesn't win an outright majority, second preferences are then considered. It is understood that is what has happened at the Exeter count - with Alison Hernandez thought to have more than 50 per cent of votes in Devon, but no overall winner in Cornwall. The constituency though is the whole of Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

The outcome will now not be announced until late afternoon or early evening.
