Devon and Cornwall's Police and Crime Commissioner has outlined plans to increase the portion of council tax that goes towards policing.
Tony Hogg's office say the increase of just under 2% equates to around £3 extra per household and will help secure 20 frontline officer posts.
His Police and Crime Plan takes into account the need to reduce spending by £12m a year by 2018.
Mr Hogg warns that the savings will become harder to achieve towards the end of that period.
The Police and Crime Panel will be need to approve the rise before it can take effect.
