Report assesses success in tackling domestic violence

A report on Devon's domestic violence service goes before county councillors this morning - outlining its successes and where more work is needed. A new contractor took over the service for the council 18 months ago and the report covers their performance in the 12 months to the end of March this year.

Results have been good in terms of domestic abuse victims who were assessed as high or medium risk, with just under half seeing a complete end to the abuse and 95 per cent feeling safer.

The domestic violence perpetrator programme has reached 48 abusers and has led to many children being removed from child protection plans.

However that programme isn't suitable for younger abusers, aged under 21, and a new project will be established later this year to help them build healthier relationships.

The report also highlights the extra action needed to support children in families where the abuse victim is not medium or high risk, and work is underway to address that.
