Storm Evert on its way

Devon gets wind (courtesy: Met Office)

Who knows anyone called Evert?

'E's are not good, as storm Evert heads from the Atlantic and is set to hit the south west overnight on Thursday and into Friday.

Exeter's Met Office has also issued an amber weather warning for the strength of winds. Yellow warnings are in place for other parts fo the region.

Gusts in Cornwall could hit 75 miles an hour in exposed places. Other coastal areas in Devon could be hit by winds of 40 to 60 miles an hour.

Some areas may get rain too.

Met Office principal operational meteorologist Dan Suri said: “Storm Evert will bring some high winds, particularly along the northern coast of the southwest, but there will be gusty winds more widely in southern areas, which brings the potential for some impacts, especially for those that might be travelling or camping in the weather.

“Storm Evert will move eastwards across southern UK during Friday daytime, clearing into the North Sea during Friday evening. As well as the high winds, there will also be some heavy rain before it leaves our shores, with up to 40 mm possible over parts of Wales and the southwest."

The amber warning means Evert could cause damage to infrastructure and leading to travel disruption. The Met Office also explains:

  • Probably some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs. There may also be some fallen trees and damage to temporary outdoor structures is probable
  • Longer journey times and cancellations likely, as road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected
  • Some roads and bridges likely to close
  • There is a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • Flying debris is likely and could lead to Injuries or danger to life
  • Injuries and danger to life is likely from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties
