Suspicious packages found in Exeter

Part of Exeter's city centre has been evacuated after the discovery of two suspcious packages.

One device was found near St Sidwell's primary school, which was evacuated, and the other in the King William Street Car park.

The first was discovered at five to seven this morning on York Road by the caretaker of St Sidwell's. When he looked inside a bag he saw wires and the school was closed. Head Kathryn Rowden says her staff did an excellent job in evacuating the children quickly and efficiently...St Sidwell’s is a Church of England school and there are children of all faiths, and some with no faith, who learn together and play together very harmoniously.

Cordons have been put up in both areas and people are being evacuated from their homes and taken to rest centres at the bus station and St James Park. A number of roads including Longbrook Street and Sidwell Street have been closed. Police are asking people to avoid the city centre and there's likely to be an impact on train services.

Bomb disposal experts have been called in.
