Devon fire and rescue says more than half the house fires in the Exeter and East Devon area are related to cooking.
In the last financial year there were 129 domestic fires - and 78 started in ovens, grills, toasters or microwaves.
The service is advising people to take care not to be distracted when cooking - especially after a night out drinking, when it's safer to get a takeaway.
