One in eight pass
An undercover operation across Torbay has found that seven out of eight hotels failed child exploitation checks.
During the evening of action, a plain-clothed officer and a cadet posed as an older guest and a minor, attempting to book a double bed for the night with just cash and no ID.
Sergeant Neil Powers said, "Unfortunately, only one hotel challenged the relationship between the police officer and the cadet and subsequently asked for ID, with the other seven hotels processing the booking.
" However, some hotel staff did explain that they felt uncomfortable and sensed something wasn't quite right.
Following the operation, police spoke to hotel staff to educate them about spotting and recognizing the warning signs and provided documents to incorporate into staff training, emphasizing that the aim is to educate and keep people safe.
