Exeter BID vote due today

City marketing group currently due to end in March

Traders in Exeter city centre will find out on Friday whether they'll have a 'business improvement district' - known as a BID - beyond 31 March 2020. Five years ago, they voted to create a BID area, for which they pay through a supplement to their business rates. It pays for marketing and events - such as the Christmas lights - for extra cleaning and signage - and campaigns such as encouraging people to shop locally.

The group is now known as InExeter and is run by representatives from Exeter city centre businesses. They've invested around £2.4 million since being formed in 2015, all self-funded through the tax.

Businesses have been voting over the past month in a secret ballot. The results are weighted by size of business and will be announced at a private meeting at The Guildhall at noon on Friday. If approval is given, the BID area will expand slightly to include Magdalen Road.
