Exmouth lifeboat in two Easter shouts

Both are to engine failures

Exmouth's RNLI team is reminding motorboat owners to service their vessels after being called out twice over the weekend to similar incidents.

On Saturday the crew of the town's iinshore lifeboat was on exercise off Exmouth when they diverted to a 20-foot motorboat that was unable to make headway because of a gummed-up propellor.

They intervened and towed the boat and its occupants to the safety of its mooring.

The following day, Easter Sunday, the coastguard called them a report of a 2.5 ton, eight-metre motor cruiser that had run aground off Exmouth with engine failure at the entrance to the channel.

The boat, with two people on board, was unable to make progress and was towed back by the inshore lifeboat to Exmouth Marina.

No one was injured in either incident.

Exmouth RNLI lifeboat helm Harry Griffin said: “On both occasions we were able to assist the vessels in difficulty and help them to safety without further damage or risk to their occupants.

"I would urge all boat owners to carefully check their vessels to ensure that they are properly serviced, reliable and safe to use, especially following a period of inactivity.”
