They said many of the incidents were 'easily preventable'

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue have asked drivers not to drive through flood water, after a number of rescues yesterday [19 December].

While there were no casualties, and anyone who did need rescuing were led to a place of safety, the service said many of the incidents “could have been easily preventable”.

In a statement, they added: “Had an extremely busy day today fielding calls as the predicted high winds and heavy rain increased, which resulted in some external and internal flooding, as well as a high number of people stranded in their vehicles after driving through deep flood water.”

“Please can we reiterate that nobody travels unless absolutely necessary during this period of heavy flooding.”

A number of flood warnings remain in place in Devon. Full updates here
