Sir becomes Sir

Exeter College's former principal Richard Atkins is to be knighted.

In his 21 years in the role, Richard Atkins turned the college into one of the highest performing further education institutions in the country. When he left four years ago, the government appointed him to a leading role as further education commissioner. He becomes 'Knight Bachelor' in the New Year's Honours.

Sir Richard recently published his final assessment of the state of further education in the country and retired from his post.

The man who took over at Exeter College when he left, John Laremy, receives an OBE in the honours list. Under his leadership, the college has continued to expand, this year taking control of Flybe's former training academy and introducing new high-tech courses. The college's main site in the city centre at Hele Road is currently being transformed with sparkling new buildings.

John Laremy OBE is Exeter College's current principal
