An elderly man has been left with potentially life-changing injuries after his digger overturned in South Devon yesterday evening.

Emergency services were called to East Prawle near Kingsbridge at around 8.30pm, and took almost two hours to free him from the 12-tonne JCB.

The man, in his 70s and from the Kingsbridge area, was then airlifted to Derriford Hospital, with his injuries said to be ‘potentially life-changing’.

Police say the health and safety executive has been informed.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue said: “After liaising with on scene paramedics to formulate an extrication plan, they set to work stabilising the vehicle, before removing the windscreen of the 12 tonne digger with a reciprocating saw and small tools, to access the casualty.”

They added that, at 22:13pm, crews “had extricated the casualty into the hands of paramedics and was later conveyed to hospital via air ambulance.”

Crews made both the vehicle and scene safe.
