Police car collides with vehicle: man injured

Force reports itself to complaints body

Devon and Cornwall Police has referred itself to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) after a Torquay man was seriously injured in a collision with an unmarked police car in the early hours of Saturday morning.

At half past midnight, a Vauxhall Astra allegedly failed to stop for police in Truro Avenue in the town and was then followed by officers. Not long after, the police car and the Astra collided in Barton Road.

The passenger in the Astra, a 20-year-old man from Torquay, was seriously injuries. He is being treated at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

The driver, a 19-year-old man, also from Torquay, has minor injuries and was taken to hospital in Torbay. He has been arrested for a number of offences. The police officers aren't hurt..

Devon and Cornwall Police say: "The matter is now subject to an independent investigation by the IOPC therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further. Devon and Cornwall Police is co-operating fully with the IOPC investigation regarding this matter."
