Only one line running

Passengers are being advised not to try to travel by rail today, as almost no services are running in Devon.

The biggest national strike for 30 years is underway as members of the RMT union strike for more pay and to put a halt on changes to working conditions.

They say they government is involved in the background in limiting the discussions between the union and rail operators.

The strikes are on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, but that will have a knock-on effect on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday when a full timetable won't be possible.

In Devon, a limited service is running on the Plymouth to London Paddington mainline via Exeter.

No branch lines are operating.

Stagecoach, which run many of Devon's bus services, also owns Megabus, an intercity service. It says ticket sales for are 85 per cent higher than last week, and next week is following a similar trend. Thousands of extra seats have been added to its network to plug the gap during the train strike.
