Torquay United thrash Hungerford in cup-tie canter

All the hard work was done before the break

Torquay United swept into the next round of the FA Cup with a comfortable win over Southern League Hungerford.

United had done all the hard work - and scored all the goals - before half-time and could afford to take their foot off the accelerator a little in the second half.

Hungerford started well, and kept Torquay at bay for the first 20 minutes. But once Jack Stobbs had put the Gulls in front there was no looking back.

Stobbs swept in a shot after a thrilling run from defence by the impressive Lewis Collins, who was rightly named man of the match by the sponsors.

In the 35th minute United were awarded a penalty for handball and Aaron Jarvis sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot, and in the 41st minute Brad Ash scored the goal of the game, running on to a fabulous through-ball from Brett McGavin to score with a cool finish.

The tireless Tom Lapslie made it 4-0 in the 44th minute when he pounced on the loose ball after Town keeper - and former Gull - Ryan Clarke had parried a Stobbs effort, and in stoppage time there was another penalty for United as Jarvis was pushed over.

The Gulls striker picked himself up to score from the spot again.

After the break the visitors were playing for pride, and they forced a number of chances in the second half. There were some brave blocks from United defenders and a couple of smart saves from home keeper Mark Halstead.

At the other end Torquay were guilty at times of over-elaborating, although they did come close to adding to their tally.

Jarvis headed one chance against the post and Ash had a diving header well saved.

The draw for the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup - the one before the league teams join the competition - will be made on Monday.
