Bishop of Exeter doesn't like flavoured hot cross buns

Easter message says "simpler the better"

The Bishop of Exeter has pronounced his love for hot cross buns, but not necessarily new flavours that have hit the shelves such as banoffee.

"The simpler the better,: says Bishop Robert Atwell, who wants people to pause for a moment to contemplate the traditional Easter treat.

In  a video Easter message, Bishop Robert says: "Traditionally, we eat them on Good Friday. The white cross symbolises Christ’s crucifixion, the spices recalling the spices used to embalm Jesus’s body, and the peel of bitter oranges reminding us of his suffering on the cross.

He concludes: "The joy of Easter is that Christ is alive, having looked death in the face and won."

The bishop also pays tribute to Cornish poet Charles Causley.

Bishop Robert says that "in his poem ‘The Bread Man’ [Mr Causley] has an evocative phrase that has always stayed with me.

"He says that Jesus ‘was charged with bringing the living to life’. Being fully alive: that is Jesus’s promise and gift to each of us this Easter.

"So, whether you are a pancake person, an Easter egg afficionado or, like me, a lover of the humble hot cross bun, I pray that this Easter you will experience the transforming love of Christ and that his touch will bring you fully alive."
