Man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in Exeter

Witnesses are being sought

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following an alleged assault in Bampfylde Street, Exeter,  which took place in the early hours of Saturday 18 May.

It was reported that at around 2am, two people were waiting at a bus stop when they were approached by an unknown suspect and assaulted with a knife.

It was further reported that the suspect had fled but he was located by officers nearby. A knife was also located and seized at the scene.

The victims, a 22-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man, have been taken to hospital where they are being treated for their injuries, which are described as serious but not life-threatening.

A 31-year-old man from Bristol has been arrested on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder. He was treated in hospital and is now in police custody.

Scene guards were in place on Bampfylde Street, Sidwell Street and Western Way but these have now been lifted.

Detective Inspector Neil Lloyd said: “We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or was in the area and have information which could help us to please get in touch.

“While incidents of this nature are rare, it will understandably cause concern in the community. We would like to reassure the public that we are treating this as an isolated matter, and we are not seeking anyone else in relation to it.

“A number of scene guards were in place and there will be a high visibility police presence in the area throughout the day.”
