Cathedral organ goes off for repairs

Exeter Cathedral's historic 17th century organ is being temporarily replaced by digital instruments while it goes off for repair.

The whole organ is having to be dismantled, and more than four thousand pipes will be individually cleaned and mended where necessary.

The work will be undertaken by a specialist firm in Durham... in the meantime the organ's case will remain on site.

The inside of the organ will be redesigned with new soundboards and a better projection of sound into the Cathedral... but it won't be back in musical action until next year.
