Council defends double-yellow-line parking permits

Devon county council has defended its scheme allowing certain people to buy permits to park on double yellow lines. There have been claims that it's 'just another way to make money' - and concerns that the scheme could be abused.

Since last month, businesses, contractors and landlords who need access to properties have been able to buy permits enabling them to park on double yellow lines for limited periods.

It's an extension of the old scheme in which they had to know where and when they were visiting and apply online - the change enables them to make unplanned visits.

Concerns have been raised that the permits could be sold on for a profit or that the parking will cause traffic problems.

But the council says all those applying will be carefully checked and anyone abusing the scheme will be penalised.
