Councillors vote against officers' advice
Planners in the South Hams have approved changes to a house at Thurlestone, despite being told by officers that the project was ‘discordant and not harmonious’.
The owners of The Paddocks in Cross Park want to raise the roof height to create extra living space, a flat-roofed extension and partially enclosed veranda.
The development is to be finished in timber, render and a mix of slate, sedum and zinc.
Officers said the development could ‘disrupt the tranquility of this part of the South Hams area of outstanding natural beauty’, and recommended refusal.
However, the local parish council supports the plan, and Cllr Guy Pannell (Lib Dem, South Brent) said: “Overall, the design incorporates what is a rather messy layout at the moment into something which is better to look at.”
Cllr Jacqi Hodgson (Green, Dartington and Staverton) said she would be happy to support the plan if it had timber cladding instead of zinc and development management committee chairman Mark Long (Independent, Salcombe and Thurlestone) added: “It is a building of its time, but one that sits quite well within the landscape”.
The plan was passed, with conditions on the amount of zinc and glazing being used.
