A huge fire in the South Hams has raged through the night.

After being called to a property in Aveton Gifford just after midnight on Tuesday, the first team from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue immediately requested further help.

With an adjacent oil tank and gas involved and flames spreading, ten fire crews were eventually required. Police closed the nearby A379 between Aveton Gifford and Modbury.

The fire service says a domestic property was fully embraced in fire, along with several outbuildings, oil drums and several cars nearby.

By 2.50 a.m, crews confirmed half of the property had been affected by fire, along with one external ruptured oil drum, and two cars.

The fire was being fanned by winds, which hindered progress. A nearby swimming pool was used as a water source.

Not until 4 a.m. was steady progress being made damping down the fire. Crews began rotating, with relief crews being sent.

No official updates of anyone at the property have yet been published.
