Pair charged with stealing mobile home

Owner has medal for park-home campaign

Two men have appeared at Exeter Crown Court charged with the theft of a mobile home from Cullompton three years ago.

Sonia McColl, now 71, was said by police to have been left "distraught" after being left homeless when her property, valued at £30,000 disappeared in September 2017. Ms McColl was awarded an OBE in 2014 for her work seeking better protection for residents of park homes.

This week, Stwart Gregory, 42 of Normandy, Surrey and Darren Baseley, 46, of Cranbrook, East Devon, denied stealing it when they appeared at Exeter Crown Court.

The 40-ft long caravan was spirited away one night from The Yard, Willand Road, Cullompton, having been lifted onto a low-loader.

At the time PC Marie Gorfin said: “The home would have to had to been taken by a specific low loader trailer that is capable of taking a caravan of this size and by someone that knew what they were doing. This is a very high value and emotive crime as victim is now homeless and clearly distraught.

Mr Gregory and Mr Beseley's trail will be held in Exeter in June 2021. They have been bailed to appear at the crown court then.
