Russell Brand to appear in Devon this week

Plymouth women's charity withdraws association

A former TV presenter and film star accused of rape and serious sexual assault of several women over many years is due to appear in front of a sell-out audience in Devon this week.

Russell Brand, a comedian who is now also a favourite of conspiracy theorists on social media, brings his stand-up show 'Biopolarisation' to Plymouth Pavilions on Friday.

Tickets were snapped up long ago.

On Saturday, Channel 4 broadcast a 90-minute film in which a number of women, including one of whom was a child when he allegedly began a sexual relationship with her, made serious allegations against the performer. The TV station worked with the Times and Sunday Times on the report.

Mr Brand strenuously denies the allegations and suggests the 'mainstream media' is out to get him.

Late on Saturday, two talent agencies removed references to him from their websites.

Plymouth-based support group Trevi Women & Children's Charity has since cut ties with the 48-year-old performer, saying it is "deeply saddened and upset" about the allegations.

On Instagram it said: "Russell became aware of our charity in 2022 after hearing about some of the incredible mothers we have helped to become drug-free over the years. He wanted to support our cause and raise money through his Stay Free Foundation.

'Today's media revelations have been difficult to process but our priority remains and continues to be the safety and well-being of all women and girls now and in the future.

"We have ended our association with Russell Brand and the Stay Free Foundation.

"As a charity whose values put women's voices at the heart of what we do, we always prioritise supporting women affected by violence and abuse and empower them to live without violence and fear."
