Two cases of coronavirus in Devon

They had recently visited Italy

Two people from South Devon have contracted coronavirus after becoming infected whilst in Northern Italy.

They are among four more people in the country confirmed to have the virus, while Public Health England says work is now underway to trace their recent contacts.

Debra Lapthorne, Centre Director for Public Health England South West, said: “Public Health England is contacting people who had close contact with two confirmed cases of COVID-19. Both cases are residents from the South Devon area and became infected whilst in Northern Italy. Staff from PHE continue to support a secondary school in Torbay where one case attends.

“Close contacts will be given health advice about symptoms and emergency contact details to use if they become unwell in the 14 days after contact with the confirmed case. This tried and tested method will ensure we are able to minimise any risk to them and the wider public. If you have not been contacted by Public Health England, you do not need to take any action at this time.”

Caroline Dimond, Director of Public Health for Torbay Council, said: “I’d like to reassure people that the risk to the general public remains low in both Torbay and South Devon and we are working with health colleagues to do everything we can to stop the virus spreading and ensure the people of Devon and Torbay are protected."

The news comes as five schools in Devon closed today, amid concerns about the virus.

Churston Ferrers Grammar School near Brixham has shut, due to a "potential case of COVID-19".

In an email sent to parents, headteacher Kieran Earley said:

"Following a call late last night from Public Health England with regard to a potential case of COVID-19 at Churston, we are letting you know that the school will be closed for all staff and students today as a precautionary measure.

"You will, of course, have many questions and we will be posting updates during the day via the website and our In-touch communication system.

"We understand that this will be hugely inconvenient but once again, I must urge you not to start your travel plans this morning."

Galmpton, Collaton St Mary and Berry Pomeroy Primary Schools also shut, as well as Brixham Church of England Primary School and Pre-School.
