New operator has stepped in
Torbay is getting a Big Wheel after all – and the first rides on the 35m-tall attraction could be taken this weekend.
DeVey Events Ltd are building the wheel on Torquay seafront after previous operators the Mellors Group decided not to bring their regular Big Wheel to its usual spot next to the Princess Theatre for 2026.
They cited ‘operational and financial factors’, sparking extensive work behind the scenes by Torbay Council to secure a new operator.
The wheel, which will be accompanied by catering outlets, has become a much-loved feature of the seafront in recent years, and the local tourist industry says it has been featured in countless worldwide Instagram posts.
It even featured in a hit Bollywood movie.
Cllr Jackie Thomas (Con, Kings Ash), the bay’s cabinet member for tourism, culture and events, said: “We were naturally disappointed when the previous operator decided not to return to Torbay this year, particularly as the wheel has become such a popular and much-loved feature for both residents and visitors, but rather than dwell on that, we got straight to work with interested partners to make sure this fantastic opportunity wasn’t lost.
“I’m absolutely delighted that, in such a short space of time, we’ve secured a new operator, and that construction of this brand-new 35-metre wheel is already under way.
“This is exactly the kind of energy and ambition we want to see for Torbay; moving quickly, working positively with partners, and making sure our residents and visitors continue to enjoy brilliant attractions here in the Bay.”
The new wheel will feature enclosed gondolas, and opening hours are expected to extend into the evening to allow passengers to enjoy the coastline illuminated by evening lights.
The attraction is anticipated to open this weekend, with final timings and ticketing information to be confirmed.
