Torquay United march on with late, late win over Chelmsford

Own goal deep in stoppage time clinches the points

Torquay United’s march up the National League South table continued with a never-say-die performance at Plainmoor which saw them clinch the win deep in stoppage time.

Not for the first time this season there were more than 90 minutes on the clock when the indefatigable Gulls clinched the win.

After a goalless first half it was midfielder Brett McGavin who put United in front with a piledriver of a shot from the edge of the box.

But the Gulls were pegged back with a smart finish by Brookes.

The winning goal came as United went in search of a late goal, roared on by a boisterous home crowd who have got used to winning games with goals deep in ‘Gary Time’, as injury time has become known at Plainmoor.

A free kick was curled into the box by Will Jenkins Davies where City midfielder Samir Carruthers got up highest, but could only glance the ball beyond the reach of his own keeper and into the corner of the net.

The Torquay team was full of good performances, following on from Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Farnborough.

Brad Ash had a first half goal ruled out for offside and strike partner Aaron Jarvis hit the post. City also had their moments, and shook the Torquay woodwork with a second half effort.

But Torquay never give up these days, and their perseverance was well rewarded with the late, late winner.

United now sit second in the table with a break from league action next week as they travel to Wimborne in the FA Cup.
