Urgent action needed to prevent building free-for-all in Devon’s National Parks

Some of the most beautiful, ‘protected’ landscapes in the South West is at serious risk from housing developments under new Government proposals, the Devon branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England is warning

CPRE Devon is urging people to take immediate action to object to the wording of a lengthy consultation document – the National Planning Policy Framework – which sets out the Government’s policies on proposed developments and how they are applied.

The campaigning organisation says the proposed new wording of the NPPF is vague and ambiguous and leaves National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty across the South West without the high level of protection they currently have from developers.

Dartmoor and Exmoor, as well as Devon’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty in North Devon, South Devon, East Devon, Blackdown Hills and the Tamar Valley, would be affected by the change.

Rebecca Bartleet, Chairman of CPRE Devon said: “The omission and addition of a few words in the proposed NPPF document has huge implications for some of our most precious and valued landscapes. If this wording goes unchallenged, it will result in these areas being handed to developers ‘on a plate’. We have to fight tooth and nail to stop our National Parks and AONBs being sacrificed to unnecessary building.”
