Exeter Cathedral will be plunged into darkness tonight at the exact time war was declared on this day in 1914.
At the end of a solemn service to remember and reflect on the war, at 11pm all inside and outdoor lighting will be switched off, with just a single candle remaining lit on the nave altar.
The dean of the cathedral Jonathan Draper says as well as thinking about those lost in the first world war, the congregation will be contemplating the conflicts happening now around the world.
